TOURNAMENT RECORDS: Florida College 6-0, Alfred State College 3-3

ON THE COURT: In the second semifinal matchup of the day, #1 Florida College defeated #3 Alfred State College in three straight sets, 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-16), to advance to the 2014 USCAA Volleyball National Championship.  Florida College improves their tournament record to 6-0 while the loss drops Alfred State College to 3-3.

The Pioneers took the slight advantage over the number one seed Falcons to begin the first set, 4-2. The Flacons climbed back to tie the set at 8-8 and then went on a 7-1 run to take a 15-9 lead and force a timeout by Alfred State's head coach, Gene Doorley.  However, the timeout did not slow the Falcons momentum.  Led by senior, Camille Cram, the Falcons went on a 5-2 run following the Pioneer timeout to increase their lead to 20-11.  The Pioneers battled back to force a Falcon timeout to get the score to, 23-18. The Falcons went on to score the next two points to take the first set from the Pioneers, 25-18.

The Falcons continued their dominant offense into the second set as they recorded 16 kills on 28 total attacks. The Falcons began the set with a 7-2 start that forced yet another Pioneer timeout to try to slow down the number one team in the country.  Following the timeout, the falcons rattled off another 6-1 run to increase their lead to 13-3.  The Pioneers were never able to recover from this start and fell in the second set, 25-13. The Falcons finished the set with a .456 attacking percentage.

The third set saw the Falcons take a slight advantage to begin the third set over the Pioneers.  Trailing 6-4, the Pioneers battled back to tie the set at 10, however the Falcons countered with three straights points to make it 13-10.  The Falcons continued putting points on the board quickly by going on a 7-3 run to put the set out of reach.  The Falcons secured the third set victory, 25-16, and the match, 3-0, to advance in the 2014 USCAA Volleyball National Championship.

QUICK HITTERS:

  • USCAA Player of the Year, Malea Kalina, recorded a game-high 11 kills and also added 9 digs for the Falcons
  • First Team All-American, Abilene Rouch, had a game-high 32 assists – 32 of the Falcons 36 assists
  • Senior, Camille Crim, had 8 kills on 14 total attacks and 2 blocked shots
  • Sophomore, Janae Hamilton, led the Pioneers with 8 kills on 14 total attacks
  • Second Team All-American, Lera Braun, recorded 18 assists and 10 digs for the Pioneers
