Quarterfinal Results at the 2013 USCAA Volleyball National Championship

CANTON, NY -- Day two of the 2013 USCAA Volleyball National Championship kicked off on Friday with the final day of pool play. Only eight teams will advance from pool play to the elimination rounds, which start Friday afternoon.

Quarterfinals -- 4:00 p.m., CARC

Pool B #1 Seed Florida College def. Pool A #4 Seed University of Cincinnati-Clermont, 3-0 (25-11, 25-13, 25-21)

Florida College advanced into semifinals with a straight set win over Cincinnati-Clermont in the quarterfinals of the 2013 USCAA Volleyball National Championship. The Falcons, who earned the number one seed out of Pool B after going undefeated, have yet to lose a set in their five matches.

Florida received a tournament-high 23 kills from Malea Kalina, who hit at a .500 clip during the match. Teammate Camille Crim added 11 kills and Devyn Jackson missed double digits by one, finishing with nine kills. Laura Smith had a tournament-best 37 assists and four service aces over the course of the three sets.

The eight-time National Champions recorded their 11th win in their past 12 games at the USCAA National Championship tournament, with their only loss during the stretch coming to Daemen College in last year's championship match.

Cincinnati-Clermont had eight players record a kill, with Kiley Collins leading the way with six. Becca Walton and Alex Robb had 12 and 11 assists, respectively, for the Cougars who finish the tournament 1-4 after a 1-3 showing in pool play.

Florida advances to face overall number one seed Marygrove College in the semifinals on Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. in the CARC on SUNY Canton's campus.

Pool A #2 Seed Marygrove College def. Pool B #3 Seed Lindenwood University-Belleville, 3-2 (25-13, 21-25, 25-13, 22-25, 15-13)

Overall top seed Marygrove College survived a scare from tenth seeded Lindenwood-Belleville in the quarterfinals of the 2013 USCAA Volleyball National Championship. Lindenwood-Belleville, who earned the three seed coming out of Pool B, dropped two of the first three sets by scores of 25-13. But the Lynx rebounded each time to pull even with Marygrove before faltering in the fifth and final set.

The Mustangs were led by Nicole Kempinski, who surpassed Florida College's Laura Smith's tournament-best 37 assists with 46 of her own. Amelia Velez had a match-high 19 kills, swinging at a .500 clip for Marygrove. Teammate Kat Hall added 12 kills and 17 digs of her own, while Kara Kempinski had a team-high 18 digs. Nine players in total tallied kills for Marygrove, as they hit .338 in their first match of the tournament that went to a deciding set.

Despite hitting .136, Lindenwood-Belleville received 40 assists from Chelsi Hummert and 13 kills from Taylor Albrecht. Kenlea Herndon added 12 kills for the Lynx offense which had seven players record a kill, and Taylor Boyer anchored the defense with a match-high 22 digs.

Marygrove dominated at the net, recording eight solo blocks and 12 block assists. Meanwhile Lindenwood-Belleville had six of each, but also had 17 blocking errors.

The Mustangs advance to face Pool B's number one seed, Florida College, in the first semifinal on Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. in the CARC at SUNY Canton.

Pool A #1 Seed Daemen College def. Pool B #4 Seed SUNY Canton, 3-0 (25-12, 25-14, 25-20)

Pool A's top seed Daemen College cruised into the semifinals with a win over host SUNY Canton in a quarterfinal match-up at the 2013 USCAA Volleyball National Championship.

The Wildcats remained perfect on the week, and have lost only one set over five matches. Ye Wang and Brittany Anthon each contributed 11 kills to the Daemen effort, while Anthon added a match-high 20 digs.

Teammate Paige Tilert recorded 19 digs, and Kaley Vazquez had 20 assists to lead the Wildcats. Chelsea Turcer added 17 assists and Amber Drzymala notched seven kills and 14 digs over the three sets.

SUNY Canton, who finished fourth at the 2012 USCAA Volleyball National Championship, struggled to get on track agains the defending champions. Mackenzie Mynter poured in 18 assists, and Robyn Carroll had a team-high 13 digs for the 'Roos. Morgan Bills led the offense with six kills, while Kelsy Cornish and Lindsay Bryer each added five. 

Daemen College will advance to meet the winner of the Rochester College-Carlow match in the semifinals at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday at the CARC.

 

Quarterfinals -- 5:30 p.m., Dana Hall

Pool B #2 Seed Rochester College def. Pool A #3 Seed Carlow University, 3-1 (25-21, 25-22, 15-25, 25-22)

Rochester College held off an upset bid from Carlow, knocking off the Celctics in four sets to advance to Saturday's semifinals. There, the Warriors will face Daemen College at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday in the CARC at SUNY Canton.

Breanna Pelloni and Paige TenBrink each recorded nine kills for the Warriors, who have won four of their five matches so far during championship week. Setter Sara Hayes added match-highs of 32 assists and 19 digs to lead Rochester to the quarterfinal win.

Despite being outhit, .156 to .075, Rochester used their strength at the net to tally three solo blocks and a total of 20 block assists.

Carlow received ten kills from Nicolle Driscoll, while Amanda Knobeloch added 22 assists. Amanda McKenzie dug out 12 Rochester attacks, while Kelsey Bonk added 10 digs for the Celtics, who got bounced from the USCAA National Championship in the quarterfinals for the second straight year.

Rochester advances to meet Daemen College, the defending champions and the number one seed coming out of pool play in Pool A. The match is set for 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2 in the CARC.
